Required education and training

To become an MRI tech, you will need a high school diploma or its equivalent. Most of the time, MRI techs have an associate’s degree in a relevant field, such as an Associate of Science in MRI Technology. Another option is to take a shorter program, receive work experience, and then get certification.

Once you complete your associate degree, you’ll need to earn internship hours and pass the certification exam. You can receive certification from The American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists or from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

Some states may require that you also get a license. Knowing what your state requirements are before starting can save you a lot of time.
