Required education and training

To become an ultrasound technician, you must have your high school diploma or GED. You’ll then have to complete an associate degree to be eligible to receive certification. If you already have a degree, you can participate in an accelerated process certification program. For even more job opportunities, you can opt for a bachelor’s degree. 

After you get your degree, you’ll need to pass the certification exam, which you can do through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Credentialing International. 

You may need to get a license depending on what your employer requires. Most states don’t ask for licensing, so you can begin working right after getting your credentials.
