Every March 19, the nursing community and healthcare industry as a whole recognize Certified Nurses Day. The annual day of recognition honors nurses who hold national board certification in their specialty. It serves as a celebration of certified nurses and their dedication to excellence, professionalism, and service.
March 19 was chosen in honor of the birthday of Dr. Margretta "Gretta" Madden Styles, RN, EdD, FAAN, a trailblazer in the field of nursing certification. Before nurse credentialing was widely accepted, Dr. Styles recognized its value and pioneered its implementation across the industry. She spearheaded the nursing regulation work of the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and developed the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), advancing the development and acceptance of nursing regulations in the US and abroad. The impact of her work is still felt today by nurses and patients alike across the globe.
