Required education and training
The first step to an ICU nursing career is to become a registered nurse. To do so, you need to get your associate degree in nursing or your Bachelor of Science in nursing. Although a BSN isn’t necessary, many employers are looking for that specific credential when hiring RNs.
Once you have your degree, you need to pass the NCLEX to obtain your license. To become an ICU nurse, you will need a CCRN certification. Requirements include two- and five-year paths to certification, with practice requirements of at least 1,750 hours in direct care of acutely/critically ill patients.

If you’re already an RN, the process will be much faster. Typically, you can specialize in ICU nursing once you obtain enough training.
