5 Best Ways for Combatting Burnout

May 23, 2022

Burnout, compassion fatigue, exhaustion: these are just a few ways to describe the current well-being of our healthcare professionals. After months of enduring weekly overtime, high patient ratios, and an ever-evolving virus that swept the globe, it’s without question that essential workers across the country are considering leaving their jobs. But many, still called to service, are taking a different approach to getting back on track.

Prolink welcomed XueXia Burton to share her perspective on the issue of burnout during Nurses Week. View full Instagram Live interview here.

Here are 5 tips for combatting burnout:

Move Your Body

Go for a walk, do Pilates, dance in your room. Make sure to schedule time for this, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day! Here are some creative ways to move without hitting the gym.

Get Social (or not)

The long hours and traumatic experiences within a hospital can leave you feeling depleted. Whether it’s having a weekly Facetime date with a friend or family member or grabbing drinks with a few coworkers on your day off, it’s important to have a community that you can lean on. For our introverts, decompress with some solo activities like reading, journaling, or listening to your favorite podcast!

Set Boundaries

Learn how to say “no.” Not every activity, not every overtime shift is going to serve you. Check out Verywellmind’s advice for “saying no” here.

Treat Yourself

Get your nails done, visit that expensive restaurant whose Instagram you’ve been stalking since you started your assignment, and plan a day trip! If you aren’t caring for yourself, how can you care for your patients?

Schedule Rest

This is KEY! Sleep is a critical component of your mental and physical wellbeing. Outside of a consistent sleep schedule, it’s important to make time to sit and just breathe. Check out these 5 free apps for practicing mindfulness here.

Burnout can make a devastating impact on an individual’s mental, emotional, and physical health. Having a better understanding of your triggers and what can help alleviate the weight of this medical phenomenon will put you back on the fast track to balance.
