Clinicians licensed or otherwise certified to practice in Hawaii can now seek student loan repayment through the Healthcare Education Loan Repayment Program (HELP), a new program from the Hawaii/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center (AHEC) funded by the Hawaii State Legislature. For those with qualifying educational loans, HELP provides an incentive to start—or continue—practicing in the state.
Who is eligible for HELP?
HELP is for healthcare professionals who are:
- Licensed or otherwise certified in Hawaii
- Providing clinical care to patients living in Hawaii
- Accepting public insurance for at least 30% of care claims
- Repaying a qualified educational loan
Clinicians who meet the above requirements are eligible for loan repayment via HELP.
How does HELP work?
Clinicians must apply to be eligible for HELP, and contracts will be awarded on a competitive basis. Primary care providers, behavioral health providers, specialists in rural areas, and those in residency programs will be given the highest priority.
If a clinician is selected for HELP and chooses to participate, a minimum of two years of full-time or half-time service at a facility serving Hawaiian patients is required. Participants are also encouraged to engage in workforce development activities like teaching, recruitment, and outreach in their communities.
